Mutton chops, a classic dish made with tender cuts of mutton or lamb, can be prepared in various ways. Mutton chops continue to be enjoyed as a delicious and satisfying meal, with a rich history that reflects the evolution of culinary traditions and preferences over the centuries. Whether grilled, roasted, or simmered in a flavorful sauce, mutton chops remain a classic and enduring favorite for meat lovers worldwide. Here’s a simple and delicious recipe for making mutton chops:

Ingredients:

  • 4 to 6 mutton chops (about 1/2 inch thick)
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to your spice preference)
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or ghee
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
  • Fresh cilantro leaves for garnish
  • Lemon wedges for serving (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Marinate the Mutton Chops:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the yogurt, ginger-garlic paste, red chili powder, turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, garam masala, and salt.
    • Add the mutton chops to the bowl and coat them thoroughly with the marinade.
    • Cover the bowl and let the chops marinate in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or ideally overnight for the best flavor.
  1. Cook the Chops:
    • Heat the vegetable oil or ghee in a large, heavy-bottomed skillet or pan over medium-high heat.
    • Add the chopped onions and sauté until they become translucent and start to turn golden brown.
  1. Add the Mutton Chops:
    • Add the marinated mutton chops to the skillet.
    • Sear the chops on both sides until they develop a nice brown crust. This will take about 4-5 minutes per side.
  1. Simmer with Tomatoes:
    • Add the chopped tomatoes to the skillet and cook for another 3-4 minutes, or until they soften and blend into the sauce.
  1. Add Water and Simmer:
    • Pour in about 1/2 to 1 cup of water, depending on how thick you want the gravy.
    • Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let the chops simmer for 30-40 minutes or until they become tender. You may need to add more water if the gravy becomes too thick during cooking.
  1. Check for Seasoning:
    • Taste the gravy and adjust the salt and spice levels according to your preference.
  1. Garnish and Serve:
    • Once the mutton chops are tender and cooked through, garnish with fresh cilantro leaves.
    • Serve hot with steamed rice, naan, or paratha. You can also serve it with lemon wedges for an extra burst of flavor.

Enjoy your delicious mutton chops! This recipe allows you to adjust the spices to your liking, so feel free to make it as mild or as spicy as you prefer.
