Italian sushi, often referred to as “Itamae Sushi” or “Itameshi,” is a fusion cuisine that combines traditional Italian ingredients and flavors with the art of Japanese sushi preparation.
Suchi Recipe
Ingredients:
- Sushi rice (2 cups uncooked rice)
- Rice vinegar (1/2 cup)
- Sugar (2 tablespoons)
- Salt (1 teaspoon)
- Nori seaweed sheets
- Fresh fish (such as tuna, salmon) or cooked seafood (shrimp, crab)
- Vegetables (cucumber, avocado, carrot, etc.)
- Soy sauce, for dipping
- Wasabi and pickled ginger, for serving
Instructions:
- Cook the Sushi Rice:
- Rinse the rice in cold water until the water runs clear.
- Cook the rice according to the package instructions.
- While the rice is still warm, mix in the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Allow the rice to cool to room temperature.
- Prepare the Ingredients:
- Slice the fish or seafood into thin strips.
- Cut the vegetables into thin matchstick-like pieces.
- Rolling the Sushi:
- Place a bamboo sushi rolling mat on a clean surface and put a sheet of plastic wrap on top.
- Place a sheet of nori on the plastic wrap.
- Wet your hands to prevent the rice from sticking, then spread a thin layer of sushi rice over the nori, leaving a small border at the top.
- Lay strips of fish, seafood, and vegetables in a line across the rice.
- Carefully lift the edge of the bamboo mat and start rolling the nori and fillings away from you, using the mat to shape the roll.
- Press gently to shape the roll and seal it.
- Cutting and Serving:
- Use a sharp knife dipped in water to slice the roll into bite-sized pieces.
- Arrange the sushi pieces on a serving plate.
- Serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger.
