How To Make Red Velvet Cake

Here’s a basic recipe for making a delicious red velvet cake:

Ingredients:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • Cream cheese frosting (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy using an electric mixer.
  4. Add the eggs to the butter-sugar mixture one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. In a separate small bowl, combine the buttermilk and red food coloring. Mix well.
  6. Add the dry flour mixture to the butter-sugar mixture in three parts, alternating with the buttermilk mixture. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  7. In a small bowl, mix the white vinegar and baking soda together. Add this mixture to the cake batter and stir until well incorporated.
  8. Divide the batter equally between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops with a spatula.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
  10. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Once the cakes are completely cooled, place one cake layer on a serving plate or cake stand. Spread a layer of cream cheese frosting evenly over the top. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the entire cake with the remaining cream cheese frosting.
  12. For added decoration, you can garnish the cake with red velvet cake crumbs, red sprinkles, or fresh berries.
  13. Slice and serve the delicious homemade red velvet cake!

Note: Cream cheese frosting is the traditional choice for red velvet cake. You can either use store-bought frosting or make it at home by beating together 8 ounces of cream cheese, ½ cup unsalted butter (both softened), 4 cups powdered sugar, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until smooth and creamy. Adjust the sweetness and consistency to your liking by adding more powdered sugar or a splash of milk if needed.

Enjoy your homemade red velvet cake!
